Gustav was born in the province of Saxony in the kingdom of Prussia and immigrated to the U.S. with his parents. They traveled from Bremen, Germany on the ship Deutschland, and arrived at Castle Garden in New York City on May 13, 1872.

He married Rachel Frederica Vollrath in Germany. Because she was pregnant with their first child, Rachel did not emigrate at the same time as Gustav. She came to the U.S. later with her infant daughter Lena. The couple had eight more children after they settled in Pennsylvania: Johanna, Frank, Charles Gustav, Mary Mame, William, Fredman, Sophia, and another child who died as an infant.

Gustav had a farm and also worked as a laborer for the railroad. On the night of December 28, 1899, he was hit by a train as he was walking along the tracks on his way home from work at the railroad tunnel in Dennison Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
