Lance Davis completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Washington in 1950. He also served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Dr. Davis completed a post-graduate education attaining a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1956. While there, he met and married Patsy Ganzhorn. Lance and Patsy made their home in California and had one child, Maili Dee Davis.
Davis joined the faculty of Caltech from Purdue University in 1968 and was a professor of economics until 1980, when he was named Harkness Professor. Dr. Davis, who was instrumental in the development of the social science program at Caltech, was the executive officer for the social sciences from 1982 to 1985. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
The professional endeavors of Dr. Lance Davis included Professor of Economics, Caltech, 1968-80; Mary Stillman Harkness Professor, 1980-2005; Harkness Professor Emeritus, 2005, and Executive Officer for the Social Sciences, 1982-85. His career included published research on the evolution of capital markets, institutional change, technological change, and the economic history of financial markets. Dr. Jennen received a Clio Can award from The Cliometric Society honoring his contributions in the field of cliometrics. The society is an affiliate of the International Economic History Association.
Upon retirement, Dr. Davis moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas to be near his daughter, Maili Dee Bledsoe, wife of Curtis Bledsoe, and his grandchildren. He retired in 2005.
Lance Davis Jennen, age 85, passed on January 20, 2014. He is survived by his daughter Maili Dee Bledsoe, son-in-law, Curtis Bledsoe, four grandchildren: Aaron Jennen of Fort Smith, Peter Jennen of Rogers, Tianne Jennen of Fayetteville, and Rosalie Bledsoe of Fort Smith, and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service, led by Reverend Jeffrey Champlin of St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church of Fort Smith, was held January 26, 2014 to honor the life and memory of Dr. Lance E. Davis. Cremation was under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
