Paul Stoner Smith, 67, of Mount Zion, a former major league baseball player, was pronounced dead on arrival at Decatur and Macon County Hospital at 2:30 p.m. yesterday.
Mr. Smith was taken to the hospital by Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home ambulance after he colapsed on the street at N. Water St. and E. North St.
Coroner Phares G. Thompson said the probable cause of death was a heart attack but an inquiry will be made.
Mr. Smith was born in Mount Zion May 7, 1891, the son of Getrude Roberta Ulery and Washington Stoner Smith.
He was married to Sarah Geneva Kreig Dec. 23, 1933 in Danvers, Ill.
A member of Charles F Hight Post American Legion Dalton City, Mr. Smith attended the Mount Zion Presbyterian Church.
He was an Army veteran of World War 1 and had played professional baseball with the Boston American League team prior to the war.
Mr. Smith was with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service in Anna, ILL. from 1941 to 1945, and in Ames, Neb. from 1945 until 1951.
He retired in Mount Zion in 1951.
Surviving are his wife, one sister, Mrs. Gladys S. McGaughey, Mount Zion, and a brother, Guy Ulery Smith, San Jose, Calif. One brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow in the Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home where friends may call after 3 p.m. today. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery.
