Glen A. Bartell, 87, of Rock Island, IL, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at Unity Point Health-Trinity in Rock Island. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 22nd, from 3-6 pm at Wendt Funeral Home in Moline. Services will be Monday, June 23rd, at 11:00 am at the funeral home, followed with a funeral procession, which will pass by the Central Rock Island Fire Station, and burial at Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery.

Glen was born May 26, 1927, in Rock Island, the son of Carl and Mabel (Weitz) Bartell. At only seventeen, Glen left high school, and joined the U.S. Navy in 1944. He served as a Seaman First Class aboard the DD-561 USS Prichett Destroyer. After his Navy endeavors, he returned to Rock Island, and was the only one in his family to get his high school diploma from Rock Island High School. Glen was a member of the Rock Island Fire Department from 12 Nov 1951 - 1 Aug 1974, and then worked for several more years in the Augustana College Maintenance Department.

For 29 straight years, Glen carried the American Flag and walked in the Annual Rock Island Labor Day Parade with the Retired Rock Island Firefighters Association.

On June 5, 1959, Glen married Marguerite (Boulos) Arnold. They were married for 43 years, living in the home they built together, until she passed in 2002. He had one daughter, Darlene, who was his "miracle baby".

Glen's greatest passion in life was gardening and working outdoors. For fifty years, he maintained a massive garden and many fruit trees, always sharing his goods with family, friends, and neighbors. He had a great love for animals, and enjoyed feeding deer, fox, raccoons, and birds at his home.

He is survived by his daughter, Darlene (Rick Sodeman) Bartell; sister, Delores Norris, his bonus grandchildren, Brianna, Devin, and Caitlin Sodeman, and his dear companion, Deloros "Dee" McHenry, as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews, not only all over the country, but all over the world. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Gilbert Bartell and Donald Bartell, and his sisters, Dorothy May Bartell and Geraldine Taylor.

The family would like to thank Dr. Keeven, the entire 7th Floor South nursing staff, and the Hospice Care staff at Unity Point Health, for their compassion and superior care of Glen. Memorials in Glen's name can be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan, IL. "Heaven has gained a new gardener. Farewell, Gentle Blue Eyes. Your smile will never fade from our hearts."
