Clarke was the sixth child of eleven born to Clark Heavenhill and Fanny Wallace. In addition he had an adopted sister.
Clarke was 14 yrs. old when his mother died. There were five older children and six younger children left motherless.
I don't know when the elder Clark came to live with his son's family but he was there until his death in 1908. See bottom photo - he is the old gentleman with the white beard. Young man is Clarke, woman is Viola, standing child is Velma, seated on her mother's lap is my mother Vera. Ruth is expected but not here yet. Photo taken about 1906 at their homestead, Elk City, Oklahoma Territory. The house is a dug-out home. Ground-level windows were eye-level from the inside. This home will be destroyed by fire, year unknown. This property is located at the site of the present-day airport. Click on the photos for larger images and more information in the captions.
Havenhill brothers married Pruett sisters:
Clarke's brother Schuler C. Havenhill (1873-1938) married Viola's sister Daisy F. Pruett (1876-1963) in 1893. They had eleven children.
Clarke and Viola married in 1902. He was 31 yrs old, she was 17. They had six children in nine years (double-cousins to Sky and Daisy's kids). The last birth was twin daughters. Viola died less than two weeks later, age 26. Their children were ages 8, 6, 5, 2, and two newborns. One of the infants (Ava) died 9 days later and was buried in the arms of her mother. The other baby (Ara) was raised by an Aunt's family somewhere away from Elk City. Clarke never saw his infant daughter again. The siblings would not be reunited again until Ara was 35 yrs old. Click on Ara's link below, to see group photo taken at that reunion.
Viola's parents were living with Clarke's family at the time of the 1910 census and after her death in 1912 until he remarried about two years later - a woman named Mattie who brought with her two daughters of her own, a little older than Clarke's children. She and her girls were not kind to Clarke's daughters. They were all traumatized and remained resentful their entire lives. Yet they all adored their father.
He died of (probably) prostate cancer at age 62.
