Rev. Alan H. Buttaro, 71, Pastor Emeritus of the East Granby Congregational Church, beloved husband of Lois (Aggerup) Buttaro, died Saturday (October 13, 2007) surrounded by his family and friends. Born in Stoneham, MA, February 10, 1936, son of the late Gaetano and Audrey (Langill) Buttaro he was raised in Lexington, MA. Alan graduated from UMass with a BA in Sociology, received his Bachelor's degree in Divinity from Andover-Newton Theological Seminary in 1961 and his MA in Pastoral Counseling from St. Joseph's College, West Hartford in 1981. He served as assistant pastor at the Community Church of East Williston, NY from 1960-1966 and came to East Granby Congregational Church as Senior Pastor in 1966 and held that position until his retirement and appointment as Pastor Emeritus in 2001. A beloved husband, father, and grandfather; besides his wife and best friend Lois to whom he was married for 49 years he leaves his daughter, Janice McIsaac and her husband Chip of Granby; two sons, Mark Buttaro and his wife Judith of Derry, NH, and Bruce Buttaro of Malden, MA; his five grandsons who all enjoyed a special relationship, Andrew and Daniel McIsaac and David, Peter, and Matthew Buttaro; a brother, Philip Buttaro of Barstow, CA; and his aunt, Betty Dalrymple of Lexington, MA. He was predeceased by a brother, David Buttaro. A committed and passionate caregiver, Alan was known for his engaging sense of humor, love of the Red Sox, and warm listening skills. He was able to connect with people at every level and truly treated every aspect of his life as a ministry and his way to worship as a servant of the Lord. Active in community activities, he served as planner for the East Granby Social Action Committee in 1968 and as founder and chairman of the East Granby Action for the Elderly Commission in 1973. He even became a Certified EMT and participated as a volunteer since 1976. Alan was recognized for his community service by Asnuntuck Community College with their President's Award in 1976, the East Granby Jaycees named him Citizen of the Year in 1978, and the East Granby Lions Club awarded him Citizen of the Year in 2001. In retirement he served as pastoral visitor for the First Church of Christ, Farmington and Immanuel Congregational Church, Hartford. A Memorial Service to celebrate his life and ministry will be held Monday, October 22, 2 p.m. at the East Granby Congregational Church, Church Road East Granby, a reception will follow the service. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in the Memorial Garden at the East Granby Congregational Church. His family will receive friends at the Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, 807 Bloomfield Ave., Windsor on Sunday, October 21 from 6-9 p.m. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Memorial Fund at East Granby Congregational Church.
