James M. Brown Dies at 90; Rites Held Monday

Funeral services for James Monroe Brown, 90-year-old pioneer of the Crescent area, were conducted Monday afternoon from the Yenzer Brothers Funeral chapel.

Rev. Lynn Matlack, pastor of the First Christian church at Britton, officiated at the services. Burial was in the Crescent cemetery under the direction of the Yenzer Brothers Funeral home.

Mr. Brown, who was better known as "Uncle Jim", died Saturday in an Enid hospital. He had been in ill health for about six months, and had been living with his sons in Enid during this time.

Born August 17, 1861 in Greenville, Tenn. Brown later moved to Kansas where he married George Ann Baker at Sedan, on October 9, 1881. In 1890, they came to Oklahoma and established a home on a farm near Crescent. Since the death of his wife in 1910, Brown had lived in Crescent.

Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Miss Joan Booth, Mr. and Mrs. Q. H. Booth and William Denny. Miss Jean Booth was the pianist.

Pallbearers were Ernest Wright, Roy Blevins, Harold Smith, Larry Stoehr, Earl Moyers, and William Fox. The latter two were from Enid.

Survivors include five sons, Marshal, Gage, Cecil of Sterling City, Calif., Clarence, Earl and David, all of Enid; and four daughters, Mrs. Bessie Fields, Gage; Mrs. Pearl Blevins, Oklahoma City; Mrs. Vyolet Wehr, Stillwater, and Mrs. Fayth Smith of Bairoil, Wyoming.

Twenty-seven grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild also survive.
