BAILEY, Jonathan Simms-, Company D, listed as Jonathan S. Bailey, enlisted on 8/21/1861 at Princeton [West] Virginia-1860 MCC, age 38, farmer, married to Julia, age 39. Listed on the 1860 Mercer County Slave Schedule as the owner of 4 slaves. Son of George C. Bailey and Frances Thompson Bailey. Married to Ursula Julia Walker. Enlisted in 2nd Company H, 60th Virginia Infantry at Princeton, [West] Virginia on 8/4/1863. POW at Point Lookout, Maryland. Died on 11/7/1864, from dysentery. According to Scott in "60th Virginia Infantry" he is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, grave # 633. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran's Affairs,Bailey is buried in Section 1, Site 1, of Point Lookout Confederate Cemetery in St. Mary's County, Maryland. (See ,http://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/j2ee/servlet/NGL_v1>11/31/2006) Note- more than 3,300 are buried in a common grave at Point Lookout. These soldiers were originally buried in two cemeteries located near the prison. In 1870, the State of Maryland moved the graves a mile inland to a common grave mound. Individual graves were not possible, due to a fire that destroyed the wooden headboards. * His son, Uriah A. Bailey, served in the 11th Battalion Virginia Reserves, and later, in the 60th Virginia Infantry. See - roster of Mercer Camp, United Confederate Veterans. Brother of Thompson Bailey.
