Svenning was a tenant farmer in Mossebo, in what is now Västra Götaland in Sweden. After he died of pneumonia in the winter of 1870-1871, his widow Magdalena and their seven children emigrated to Connecticut over the following five years. The children all changed their name to Hallberg.
