Architect. Apprenticed under James Hoban, architect of the White House. Mills also was mentored by Thomas Jefferson, who invited him to study his architectural library and introduced him to Benjamin Latrobe. Major commissions of his include Monumental Church (1812-1817) in Richmond, the Washington Mounument (1814-1842) in Baltimore, and the Washington Monument (1833-1855), Patent Office Building (1836-1840), Treasury Building (1836-1842), and Old Post Office Building (1839-1842), all in Washington, D.C.
