Pvt 35th Ky Inf
On last Wednesday afternoon November 5th, 1919, God saw fit to call John Berry to his final home. He had been complaining for a few days and about 7 o'clock a.m. was taken with a chill, at 9 o'clock he became unconscious after which time he knew nothing more and passed away about 2:30 p.m. "Uncle John Berry" was one of the best known men in Green Co. and was a character unto himself. He was a jovial, kind hearted, Christian gentleman, who always met everybody with a smile and a kindly greeting. He will be missed as much as any man in the county could be missed, as everybody knew "Bro. Berry" and liked him. Although his education was very limited, he lived a very useful life and did much good in the world, he ever remembered the sick and the needy and was a great friend to the orphan's home; he sent a box to the Baptist Orphan's Home at Glendale nearly every year. He was the chief instrument in building three churches, Beech Grove, Cross Roads and Pink Ridge, doing much of the work and furnishing much of the material personally.
He was born January 19, 1847 in Green Co., Ky. He was married three times, first to Miss Margaret Kessler before he was 21 years old. She died in 1883, he then was married in a few years to Miss Catherine Bloyd who died in 1895, and he then was married to Mrs. Martha Jane Chaudoin April 10, 1897, who survives him. Three children were born to the first union, one to the second and four to the last. He was licensed to preach by Russell's Creek Baptist Church, October 27, 1897 and continued to exercise that gift up to the time of his death and was a very useful man in his calling. Bro. Berry went out to fight for his country when very young as a member of Co. H. 35th Ky. Infantry and was in the hard fought battle of Saltville, Va. Joined the Grand Army of the Republic in 1883, 88 and remained a member to his death.
