Art was born in Avoca, Murray Co., MN, to John H. and Alice E. (Haffey) Young. His father worked for the railroad, so the family moved often. By 1895, the family was living in Hibbing, MN, where Art played semi-professional baseball with the Duluth Brewers. Baseball was Art's lifetime passion, which he passed on to his only child, John J. Young.

Art was an electrician, always working in mines of all sorts - gold, copper, and coal, among others. Mine work was dangerous - more so back then than now. If the electricity wasn't safely connected, a small spark could set off a mine disaster. Like his father, Art moved frequently, following the jobs.

In April 1902, he married Constance Klo in West Superior, Wisconsin. She bore two children - Arthur Vernon and George. Constance died in 1908 in Seattle, Washington. The two children were raised by their grandfather, George Klo. In the 1910 Census, Art is living with his brother in La Junta, CO.

In December 1911, in San Diego, Art married again to Ina Rantala, born in Finland in 1888 and immigrated with her family about 1896. Within a year, Art and Ina moved to Butte, MT, where he worked in a gold mine. He was initiated as a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers on Aug 5, 1915, Local 65 of Butte, Montana. He also joined the Elks Club.

About 1921, Art and Ina moved to Crested Butte, CO, where they lived in the first house there with a 2nd floor "outhouse." Shortly thereafter (around mid-1922), Art took a job as electrician at the power plant for the coal mine at Alamo, CO. They were living here when their only child, John J. "Jack" Young, was born in Walsenburg, CO - on Friday the 13th of March during a heavy snowstorm. It was days before Art could see his new-born son!

In the early 1930s, the family moved to Leyden, CO (near Arvada), where Art worked in Colorado's largest coal mine. Ina, with her father Gus Rantala, ran a convenience store and gas station. Just a few years later, they moved to Littleton, CO, where Ina ran a cafe. A few years later, they purchased an acre of land in Brighton, CO, which included their house, two small rental houses, and a cafe and bar.

Art died in Brighton in 1961. According to his last wishes, he was cremated and his ashes scattered over his beloved Rocky Mountains.

NOTE: Art's birthday is uncertain, based on various records. The two most common dates are 21 Dec 1883 and Jan 21 1884. The most likely date appears to be 21 Jan 1884, shown here. This date is shown on his military draft registrations for both WW I and WW II and must have been provided by Art himself.
