-- HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. - James Calhoun Brissie, 97, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, April 9, 2010. James joins his loving wife, Isabel in Heaven.

Born in Hodges, S.C., the son of the late Samuel Leland Brissie and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Lee Hodges Brissie, James lived all of his early years in Hodges while attending Bailey Military Academy and Erskine College.

James and Isabel lived most of their married life in Fort Mill, S.C., where James retired from Springs Mills after many years in the textile industry. They were members of Fort Mill First Baptist church, where James served for many years as a deacon and on many church committees

They moved to Hendersonville in 1994 to be near their son and family. James and Isabel were members of Hendersonville First Baptist. He was a truly a loving and devoted husband and caregiver for his dear wife Isabel during her struggle with Parkinson's. Everyday he was with her at the care center, missing only when illness kept him away. During their 68 years of marriage he was a true example of a Christian loving devoted husband

"Papa", as all the family called him, loved working outside with his vegetable garden, azaleas and roses. The vegetables he grew were certainly enjoyed by a lot of folks. He propagated many azaleas and they were gifts in family and friends' gardens. Before moving to Hendersonville he enjoyed taking care of over 100 rose bushes and provided many bouquets for friends.

He is survived by his son, Jim Brissie and wife, Libby; granddaughter, Kelda Bowers and husband, Jerry; grandson, Jimmy Brissie and wife, Rhonda; great-granddaughter, Anna Sgibnev, great-grandson, Tanner Bowers; and great-great-grandson, Richie Hoyle. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and many friends in S.C., and Hendersonville

He was the last surviving of nine children of Samuel and Lizzie Brissie. He was predeceased by sisters, Grace Hudgens, Sara Parks, Margia Brissie; and brothers, Leland Brissie, Martin Brissie, Sam Brissie, Eugene Brissie and Robert Brissie.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 12, at Unity Cemetery in Fort Mill. Dr. Gordon Elliott will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, One East Wacker Drive, Suite 2810, Chicago, Il 60601.

An online guest book is available for family and friends by visiting www.thosshepherd.com.

The Brissie family would like to express our heart felt appreciation to Hendersonville Health and Rehabilitation for their loving and compassionate care for "Papa".
