Applegate, Thomas S., born Morgan County, Indiana 1834. Son of Joseph and Lavina Blunk Applegate, the father born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1808 and the mother in Harrison County, Indiana 1804, daughter of George and Rebecca (David) Blunk. Mrs Blunk died at age 106. Her mother reached age 115, a brother David died at age 103. Mrs Blunk married Thomas Applegate and came to Iowa with parents in 1854, settled in Sugar Creek Twp. Father, Joseph lived there until his death in 1880, his wife died in 1887. Thomas Applegate was married 1854 to Sarah Rivers who was born in Morgan County, Indiana in 1831 and in 1848 came with her parents, Richard and Mary Watson Rivers to Poweshiek County. Richard was one of the first of three settlers in Sugar Creek Twp and Sarah was the first white woman to settle there (Mrs Sarah Watson River)(See Poweshiek County, History, Vol 2. Page 286)

Wounded severely Oct. 19, 1864, Cedar Creek, Va. Promoted Second Corporal Nov. 2, 1864. Mustered out Jan. 5, 1865, Davenport, Iowa.
His brother, Ira Applegate, enlisted same day into same company.
