Arthur was the son of Carl Christian Jacob Ferdinand Obenland and Christiana Katharine Goeldenboth. Both of his parents were German immigrants.
Arthur was born in Howard County, Maryland. He only lived for a month. He was the fourth of five children born to Carl and Christiana. The others were Rosa, Katharine, Caroline and another infant who lived only 3 days.
Arthur was buried next to his baby brother, who passed away on March 9, 1883.
