" 'Uncle Willie' Godwin is Dead"
Retired Policeman Known by Thousands
William H. Godwin, who served 38 years on the Jacksonville police force before his retirement as a sergeant in 1945, died suddenly at 6:30 am today at his home, 1803 East Eighth street. He was 71. Known in the police department and to thousands to oldtime Jacksonville residents as 'Uncle Willie' Godwin was born in Clay County Jan 24, 1877. He entered the police department Nov. 4, 1907 and was assigned to what then was Beat 6, on Riverside Avenue from Forest Street to the viaduct. He was made a docket clerk Nov. 1, 1926, and promoted to sergeant Feb. 19, 1938. before his retirement, effective July 1, 1945, he was serving as desk sergeant in the Riverside precinct station. Older members of the police force said 'Uncle Willie' Godwin was chiefly noted for his unfailing kindness and his even temper. He never became excited or lost his head, they say. The retired policeman was a deacon emeritus of the Franklin Street Baptist Church. He leaves the widow, Mrs. Lucy Godwin; two daughters, Mrs. J. J. Carroll of this city and Mrs. David Hines, Glen Olden, Pa.; two sons, James R. Godwin, Jacksonville and Chief Warrant Officer J. C. Godwin, U.S. Marine Corps, Quantico, Va; three sisters, Mrs. Abbie Phillips and Miss Tiny Godwin, Jacksonville and Mrs. Laura Bell, Maxville; two brothers, James A. Godwin, Maxville and Curtis Godwin, Jacksonville and five grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are under direction of Seashole Funeral Parlors.
