The Reverend Elijah Kellogg, came to the Harps-well Center Congretional Parish in 1844. Capt, Thomas Skolfield, and
wife Jeanette made their home on Ragged Island for a number of years- Some of his friends, effectionately called him "Ragged Tom". Thomas would invite the Rev,
Kellogg out for Sunday dinners, often and have him give a sermon to Jeanette and children-(Jeanette was quite religious.)I don't know about Tom! Rev. Elijah Kellogg built his home in Harpswell, he brought Stones and cut timber on Ragged Island (hauled, no doubt, by Capt. Thomas, his good friend) for the job. Rev. Kellogg went to sea as a boy of 13 and had hopes of becoming a sea-Captain- but such was not to be - but he did quite a bit of writing stories of the sea- in his "Elm Island Series" (which you may find in an old book store) In the stories, as told to me by Grandmother, Deborah , he pictured Capt. Thomas Skolfield his friend, as a "Captain Lion Ben" - It would be something if you ran across some of those old books. Also, as told to me by Grandma. Harriet Beecher Stowe - wrote one story- "The Pearl of Orrs Island" about a home of the Orrs or Johnsons- I can not remember which one.
