Funeral services for Elmer Calvin Allyn, age 89, of Atkinson, formerly of Cleveland Community were held July 10, 2003 at First Presbyterian Church, Atkinson. Graveside services and interment were at Cleveland Cemetery, north of Stuart.

Elmer was born April 29, 1914 to Calvin and Laura Mabel Suzann Lofquest Allyn at Dustin, Nebr. He attended grade school at Clay Creek Country school, grades 1st through 8th and then Stuart high school where he graduated in 1932 as Salutatorian, president of his class and was on student council.

He played on the football team in his junior and senior year- Stuart's first 11 man team and they had only 12 players out for football.

Elmer married Alma Lovina Lofquest on Aug 13, 1934 at Winner, SD. To this union were born 1 son and 5 daughters.

They moved to Alma's grandfather's farm in 1935 lived there and farmed until moving to Atkinson on Oct 30, 2002. He as a devoted member of Cleveland Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, superintendent of Sunday School and President of cemetery board.

Elmer served in school boards for dist 22 (Dustin) and 218 (Pleasant Hill) for 32 years. was a member of Cleveland Township Board for 32 years (the Beaver Creek road was rerouted during this time); he served on the soil conservation Service Committee; weed board; director of Rural Electric Ass for 10 years.

He loved to visit, always had a joke to tell, enjoyed singing (especially when the family stood around the piano singing while Alma played the piano). He was also a member of a quartet that sang at church and in the neighborhood.

Elmer passed away July 7, 2003 in Atkinson, following a heart attack.

He is survived by wife, son Lawrence and wife Anita of St Charles, SD; 5 daughters Mary Ann and Dick Straka of Onamia, MN; Patricia Kay Custer of Scottsbluff; Terri Lee and Gary Mitchell of Stuart; Deborah Ruth of Lincoln; Linda Rae and Tim Peterson of Stuart. 20 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; sisters Cora Sweet of Stuart; Laura Artzer of Sterling, Colo; 4 sisters in law Sarah Allyn of O'Neill; Dora Allyn of Grants Pass, Oregon; Betty Lofquest of Ainsworth; Valera Philbrick of O'Neill; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by parents, 2 brothers, James and Ralph; sister Delia McClurg.
