ALBERT AND JULIA MILLER (d. 1946)

Two Overcome By Gas; Man Dies at Lunch Counter
An aged couple was asphyxiated by gas as they slept in their west side home
early Sunday morning…Albert J. Miller, 73, and his wife, Julia, 75, of 2002
Western avenue.
Albert Engel, 56, of 420 North Ninth street.
The Millers were found dead in bed shortly before noon Sunday by a daughter
and son. A gas jet in the oven of the kitchen range, left partially open by
mistake, had permitted gas fumes to filter through the home.
A daughter, Esther, who had resided with her parents, had gone to Milwaukee
Saturday for a weekend visit. Another daughter, Mrs. Ben J. Schmiedicke, who
went to the home to stay with her parents shortly before 11 o’clock found the
doors locked and received no answer to her knock. She called her brother, Earl,
and they forced the door to find Mr. and Mrs. Miller dead.
Services Tuesday
Coroner Theodore Teitgen, who was summoned, said Mrs. Miller had recently
undergone an operation for a cataract and her sight had been impaired. He added
she probably was not aware that she had failed to turn the gas stove burner
completely off.
Double funeral services will be held for Mr. and Mrs. Miller at the Urbanek and
Schlei funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Rev. Carroll Hinderlie officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The bodies may be viewed at the funeral
home.
Mr. Miller was born in this city in 1873 and in 1902 married Miss Julia Mathieson
in Gibson. He was employed for many years as a millwright at the plant of the
American Seating company. When that plant moved away he was employed at the ship
yards and in recent years has been custodian at the Manitowoc Vocational school.
Heart Attack Fatal.
Survivors are two daughters, Esther at home and Mrs. Ben J. Schmiedicke of this
city; two sons, Emil and Earl of this city; two brothers, Charles of Two Rivers
and Edward of Stangelville; three sisters, Mrs. George Althen of this city, Mrs.
John Baetke of Mishicot, Mrs. Henry Tess of two Rivers; and five grandchildren.
Mrs. Miller was born in Gibson in 1871…
