Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, February 15, 1901, p. 1: "BENJAMIN FRANKLIN MURPHY LIVED HERE IN EARLY DAY. B. F. Murphy, Who Died in Arizona, Manitowoc Resident in 50's The announcement of the death of B. F. Murphy, which occurred at Prescott, Arizona, Thursday, was received with regret by many friends among the older residents of the city, Mr. Murphy having spent many years in Manitowoc, during the early days. He located in Manitowoc county, at Cato in 1855 and later came to this city, where he was at one time chosen marshal, and was quite prominent. Mr. Murphy was born at Waterbury, Me., 83 years ago and his early life was spent in that state. Later he traveled extensively until taking up his home in Wisconsin, where he resided until enlisting in the army during the civil war. Returning here he remained some few years, and then removed with his family to California and later to Arizona. His wife died years ago and was buried at Evergreen cemetery in this city. Deceased was the father of seven children, six of whom survive him. They are N.O. Murphy, present governor of the state of Arizona, Henry and Frank, of Prescott, the latter being president of Sante Fe, Prescott & Phoenix R.R. Co., Mrs. Ida Stevens, Mrs. Hollister, Bristol, Wis., and Mrs. F. Lane, Kenosha. The body will be brought here for interment, probably arriving Monday."
