PIONEER CITIZEN GOES TO HIS REWARD
Henry Joehnck, one of the original settlers and one of the three remaining members of the colony which came to Grand Island in 1857 and founded Grand Island, passed away at his old home southeast of the city on Saturday evening.
Mr. Joehnck was born in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany on April 28, 1835, and was 86 years, 11 months and 14 days of age. He attended school in the fatherland until 16 years of age and after four years spent in Berlin, learning the trade of wagon maker, came to America with his parents, who located at Davenport, Iowa. On March 27, 1857, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Goos and two months later they joined the colony of German-Americans which had been formed to open up a new territory in the Platte valley in Nebraska. In July 4, 1857 the colony planted the American flag in the local settlement.
Of the ten children born to Mr. and Mrs. Joehnck, nine are still living, William, the oldest, died in February 1919; Fred Joehnck resides in Oxnard, Cal.; Henry and Charles in Grand Island; Dora Fuehrmann in Brooklyn, N. Y.; Laura Thuernagel in this city; Christian Joehnck at Chippewa, Wis.; Augusta Engellaender at Omaha; Mrs. John Meves in this city and Detlef Joehnck at Rocky Ford, Colo., all of whom were in attendance at the funeral, with the exception of Mrs. Fuehrmann, of Brooklyn, N. Y., who was unable to do so. Besides the children, there are many grandchildren and great grandchildren to mourn his loss. The wife of Mr. Joehnck passed away about six years ago.
A brother, Hansthemou (Illegible). A brother, Hans Joehnck passed away in Iowa last week and was buried on Friday. Another brother, John, remains and was in attendance at the funeral, which was held this morning from the old home, Rev. Harman of St. Paul's English Lutheran church officiating.
