He was born in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, Scotland, on July 31, 1914, the son of John G. and Elizabeth (Cairney) Hughes. Mr. Hughes attended schools in Scotland before arriving in Niagara Falls, NY in 1928, where he attended local schools and graduated from Trott Vocational High School. He was employed for the Chevrolet Company as a collision mechanic and painter in Niagara Falls, Bradford and Erie, PA from 1932 to 1979 and had worked for the former Kellogg Chevrolet, Don Allen, Russo and Massaro Chevrolet in Niagara Falls, before retiring in 1979.
Mr. Hughes enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating. He was a fine artist and photographer and a great lover of nature. He used his artistic talents in building his home and in boat building. He enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States and Canada in his trailer.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the 3 F Sportsmen's Club, the Seven Clan Bow Hunter, Cataract Campers, the Cataract Camera Club and the Niagara Society of Artists.
In 1949, he and his family moved from Niagara Falls to Lewiston, NY. He was the husband of the late Audene Marie (Masser) Hughes, who died in March of this year; they had been married for over 73 years.
Mr. Hughes is survived by a son Bruce ( Linda) Hughes, Lewiston, NY, two daughters Darlene A. (Austin) George of Baltimore, MD and Bonnie M. (late James) Kirby, of Fall River, MA, also survived by seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and many nieces and nephews He was the brother of the late Elsie Smith, Margaret Hammond and Jean Goodwin.
