Bennie Elmer "Curley" Abbott, 80, of Madison, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at his residence.

He was born April 16, 1932, in Shelbyville, Ky., the son of Elmer and Bessie Reece Abbott. He was raised in Trimble County, Ky., and was a graduate of Trimble County High School. He served in the Navy from July 7, 1949, to July 26, 1951, rising to the rank of seaman during the Korean War. He was first married to Frances Tindle in 1950. He was married Nov. 9, 1974, to Marilyn Jean Wilwert. He had lived in Madison the past 20 years and was a member of Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion. He owned and operated Curley's Cafe on West Street in downtown Madison and was the manager of the cafeteria at the Indiana-Kentucky Electric Corp. He had last worked in security at companies in Madison and Louisville, Ky.

He drove a tour bus in Anaheim, Calif., from 1975 to 1996. He owned and operated Curley's Pizza in Madison from 1968 to 1975. "KY Curly" was his stage name and he enjoyed singing, playing the guitar and the drums. He had performed with Elvis Presley, Porter Wagoner, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and other recording artists.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Jean Wilwert Abbott; four sons, Bennie Wayne Abbott of Milton, Ky., Bobby Jean Abbott of Greenwood, Joey Abbott of Milton, Ky., and Michael Abbott of Madison; one daughter, Patty Zahm of Franklin; three step sons, William Eugene Forry of Houston, Texas, Danny Lee Forry of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and Robert S. Forry of Nuevo, Calif.; one brother, Terry Abbott of Hanover; four sisters, Hazel Stamper of Lexington, Lois Boulton of Madison, Anna Francis Flanagan of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., and Brenda Beverly of Bedford, Ky.; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Tina Abbott; his father, who died Nov. 16, 1984; his mother, who died Jan. 19, 2000; one brother, Allen Joe Abbott, who died Feb. 2, 1941; and his first wife, Frances Tindle.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel. Burial will be in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.

Friends may call at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m.
