Rose Mary Smischney, 92, of Shooks, Minnesota died Friday, November 18, 2011 at the Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial will held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Blackduck with the Rev. Raul Cobo-Perez presiding. Visitation will be held from 5 – 7 PM on Monday, November 21st with a 7 PM Prayer Service and Rosary at Cease Funeral Home in Blackduck and one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Interment will be at the St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Shooks, Minnesota. Active Pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
Rose Mary was born on January 28, 1919 in Shooks Township, MN, the daughter of Joseph and Opal (Young) Neft. She attended country school in Shooks. She married Rudolph Harry Smischney on June 2, 1938. After their marriage, they farmed in Saum, MN. In 1942 they purchased land in Shooks where they built and developed a farm. They resided there until 1980 when they moved to her parental farm and homestead in Shooks where she has lived since. She was a charter and life member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Shooks until its closing in 1987 when she then became a member of St Ann Catholic Church in Blackduck. She was a past member of the St. Joseph's Christian Mothers group. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She was a dedicated quilter and made many quilts for her family on special occasions. She really enjoyed the life on the farm and was active participant in all aspects of the farm work.
She is survived by her children; James (Pamela) Smischney of Kelliher, Joyce (Jerome) Mueller of Princeton, JoAnn (Mike) Foley of Sauk Centre, Josephine (Errol "Swanny") Swanson of Apple Valley, Joseph "Pat" (Laura) Smischney of Kelliher, Jerome (Diane) Smischney of Shooks, Julian (Maureen) Smischney of Shooks, Jerald (Ione) Smischney of Saum, and Jeffrey (Kimberly) Smischney of Rush City, 26 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 4 sisters, Leona Mayer of Wausau, WI, Margaret Erickson of Flint, MI, Mildred Olson of Deer River, MN, and Evelyn (Rodney) Leach of Kelliher, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph in 2004; her parents; two sons, John and Jean; a daughter in law, Becky Smischney; two grandchildren, Jay and Kimberly Smischney; 5 sisters, Helen Hufnagle, Sister Nivard Neft (Mary Ann), Agnes Gitzen, Josephine Thums, and Alma Collins; and one brother, Leonard Neft.
