Son of Squire and Ann Burgess (see 1850 Coosa County, AL Census). Husband of M.E. Murphey. Father of Earnest, Newton, Samuel and Robert Burgess. Newton's mother died in Ouachita Parish along with one of his sons in 1881 (see son Earnest's linked memorial below for the full obituary).

Booth's Records state the following:

Burgess, Newton (also Burguess, N.), Corpl. Pvt. Cos. F. and K. 9th La. Infty. En. July, 7th, 1861. Camp Moore, La. Present on all Rolls, July 7th to Aug. 31st, 1861, Sept. and Oct., 1861, Absent, sick, at Hospl. Present on all Rolls Nov., 1861, to Feb., 1862. Absent on all Rolls from June, 1862, to April, 1863, from wounds. Record copied from Memorial Hall by the War Dept. in June, 1903, Born Alabama, occupation mechanic. Res. Bonner, La., age 35, single. Disabled at first Winchester and discharged in Aug., 1862.
