Civil War Confederate Major General. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1841, was commissioned an officer in the 1st Artillery and served on the frontier. At the start of the Civil War, he entered the Confederate service as a Major of artillery and fought at the Battle of First Manassas. Promoted Colonel in June 1861, he was appointed Chief of Artillery and Ordnance, for the Army of Northern Virginia. He was on duty in the Potomac district, in command of a brigade of Georgia regiments when promoted Brigadier General in July, 1861, to command of Department of East Tennessee. In December, 1862, he was placed in command of the Trans-Alleghany Western Department of Virginia and was promoted Major General in charge of the operations in defense of the Virginia & Tennessee railroad and the salt mines. From early 1863, he was in command of the department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida until succeeded by General Hardee in October, 1864. He commanded the district of South Carolina in January, 1865 and the department of South Georgia and Florida until he surrendered at Tallahassee in May, 1865. After the war, he engaged in farming and appointed to a position in the office of the adjutant-general at Washington, in 1880.
