Edythe was the 7th of 9 children born to Jehu, Jr. and Isabelle Jane (Hartgrave) Harlan. The first 8 children, including Edythe, were born near Dumont, Butler Co., Iowa. In 1886 or 1887, the family, except the oldest child, moved to and homesteaded land just south of Twin Lakes in central Rock Co., Nebraska where their 9th child was born in 1888. Most of the above info was quoted from the book titled "History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family" compiled by Alpheus H. Harlan printed in 1914. It has her birth year being 1884.
In 1893, her parents purchased an 80 acre farm in southeast corner of Loup Co., NE near Kent, NE and moved there.
Edythe married Xenif Vane Kelly on Mar 25, 1907 in Taylor, Loup Co., NE. They were the parents of two sons: Dale Harlan and Vaughn V., and one daughter: Lorma Lorraine. They resided in Franklin, Franklin Co., NE since about 1913. Mr. Kelly developed epilepsy and was declared insane and was committed to the Hastings State Hospital at Ingelside, NE in Oct, 1927 at about 59 years of age; then shortly released; then re-committed permanently in Feb, 1929. It is said that he fell off of a windmill tower which caused this illness. Due to Mr. Kelly being incurably insane, they were divorced on May 12, 1946. Sometime thereafter Edythe married Frank J. Schmidt. No Marriage Record found in Nebraska so probably married out-of-state.
PLEASE NOTE: Her gravestone and Death Certificate says she was born on Dec 22, 1893 which cannot be correct. In the 1900 Census she was listed as one of her father's (Jehu Harlan) "household members" and her age was listed as 15. How could that be when according to the Death Certificate she wasn't born yet?!?! Her then spouse Frank Schmidt was the informant. He was in fact about 5 years younger than her so perhaps she didn't want him to know that she was older than him!?!? The name on her gravestone is Edythe Kelly Schmidt. She is buried between her daughter Lorma Lorraine Kelly and her then husband Frank J. Schmidt.
