NATHANIEL POWELL 1784 - 1851
___________________________________________________________

Nathan Powell was born 1784 in that area of Bladen Co., NC that became Robeson Co., son of Douglas Powell, Jr. This branch of the Powell family lived on South Ashpole Swamp. Nathan shows in his father's household in 1790 - 1800. He married Charity Bird, dau. of Rev. Isaac Bird, of Robeson Co., NC. She is mentioned in his LWT.

In the 1810 census of Robeson Co., NC, Nathan Powell shows two households from his father, Douglas Powell, Jr. Nathan Powell has not been found in the 1820 census, although all evidence points to him still being in North Carolina. The 1820 Robeson Co., NC census shows his father, Douglas Powell, and brothers Stephen and Daniel Powell, living nearby.

About the time Douglas Powell died in 1824, several of the Powell brothers, Nathan, Jethro, and Stephen Powell, moved to the new territories opening up in Georgia. Some had already located there, apparently, as Douglas Powell's LWT refers to "my children in Georgia." Daniel Powell moved on to Choctaw, then Carroll Co., MS abt 1834.

In 1830, Nathan Powell was in Dooly Co., GA. In 1840, he was in Lee Co., GA, prob. cut into the new county in 1827, with his sons Quinny Powell and Loami Powell. Sons Nathan D., Dennis and Byrd Powell were living in Nathan's household. A number of the Powells died during the mid-1840's, likely from the yellow fever epidemic which swept that portion of Georgia in successive years, 1844-48.

Loami Powell died about 1845; his wife Catherine Powell shows with his family in 1850 Lee Co., GA. Quinny Powell likely before 1850 as well. Rhoda Powell, who shows in 1850 Lee Co., GA is his widow.

Some have claimed that Quinny Powell of Lee Co., GA is the same man of that name in Monroe Co., AL. Not true. DNA tests on descendants of the Monroe Co., AL Quinny Powell show conclusively that he was Haplogroup R1b1a2. The family of Nathan Powell of Lee Co., GA was Haplogroup I1. Therefore, Quinny Powell of Monroe Co., AL could not possibly be a descendant of Nathan Powell of Lee Co., GA. Haplogroups do not change in one generation.

Both Loami and Quinny Powell are mentioned in the estate records of Wm J. Ford, whose estate was probated in Baker Co., GA, 1850.

Nathan Powell died in March 1851. His gravesite is not marked. He is likely buried on his homeplace, Lot # 100, 1st Land District, Lee Co., GA along with sons Quinny Powell and Loami Powell. Son, Bird Powell was appointed administrator of Nathan Powell's estate on 8 April 1851. Nathan's wife, Charity Bird Powell, had predeceased him, likely in the late 1830's.

Nathan Powell might have remarried before his death in 1851. His 1850 household shows a much younger Margaret Powell and a one year old Charles B. Powell.

Nathan Powell served as one of the first Sheriffs of Lee Co., GA and as a Lieutenant in the Georgia Militia.

This branch of the Powell family is Haplogroup I1. Descendants have been tested & results are posted at the Powell DNA Project (google the phrase). If you are a male descendant of Nathan Powell or his many siblings, please consider submitting a DNA sample to add to our growing body of evidence linking this family together.

Whereas Bird Powell makes application to me for Letters of Administration on the estate of Nathan Powell, late of said county, deceased, these are, therefore, to cite, summons and admonish all and singular, the kindred and creditors of said deceased to be, and appear, at my office within the time prescribed by law, then and there to shew cause, if any exist, why said letters should not be granted.

Given under my hand, this day, April 8th, 1851.

Tifton Gazette, x 15 Nov 1907:

"Doerun, Ga., Nov. 13- Mr. Dennis Powell, an aged and honored citizen of this city, who was stricken with paralysis Tuesday morning, is in a precarious condition and is not expected to live. He is unable to use the left side of his body at all and can scarely speak above a whisper. He is 77 years of age and if the end should come at any moment, it would be no surprise to his friends."

Tifton Gazette, x 10 April 1908:

"It has been suggested since the Old Fiddler's Convention in Valdosta that a similar one be held in Tifton. We want to see a convention in Tifton with Pete Kendall, Bird Powell, John Williams and a hundred more of this kind."

Tifton Gazette, x 9 Feb 1912:

"Messrs J.L.D. and D.B.L. Powell of Moultrie, accompanied by Mr. Lanier of Perry, Fla. spent Monday night and this morning in Tifton. It has been a quarter of a century since "Babe" and "Hun" and the writer, with the other boys played marbles until midnight in the white, sandy yard of the Powell homestead by the flickering light of a lightwood knot fire, but it seems only yesterday in memory."

Tifton Gazette, x 19 Dec 1913:

"Mr. Dennis Powell died at Doerun on Tuesday afternoon, aged 83 years. He had been in bad health for some time but the immediate cause of his death was a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Powell was one of the pioneers of Worth County and a man upright in all of his dealings, and just, alike to himself and his fellow man. He is survived by his children, some of them among the leading citizens of Worth and Colquitt Counties.

In the years gone by, when the wiregrass was full of deer and other game, Mr. Powell was a great hunter, and his home on Warrior Creek was a rendezvous for many friends and lovers of good sport. We sympathize with the bereaved family in his death."
