Harry was the only child of German immigrants Henry John and Friederike Elise Mohrmann Ottens. He served with the 555th and 573rd Signal Air Warning Battalions in World War II. He landed at Utah Beach during the Normandy Invasion and suffered frostbite in his leg during the Battle of the Bulge. He married Marguerite I. Seiders on Sept. 8, 1951 and the couple had two sons. Harry was employed as an engineer with the New York Telephone Company.
