Biblical Figure. Ishmael, a figure in the Tanakh and the Quran, was the first son of Abraham according to the Bible. Ishmael was born to Abraham and Sarah's Egyptian handmaiden Hagar. According to the Genesis account, he died at the age of 137. The Book of Genesis, and the Christian and Islamic traditions consider Ishmael to be the ancestor of the Ishmaelites (Hagarenes: Arabians or Muslims) and patriarch of Qaydār. According to Muslim tradition, Ishmael the patriarch and his mother Hagar are buried next to the Kaaba in Mecca, under the area demarcated by the semi-circular Hijr Ismail wall.
