Christian Grass was the oldest son of Jacob and Mary Oberlander Grass. Both parents came from Germany at an early age. At the age of 10, Christian's family moved to Marshall County, Indiana. He first married Mary Snyder who died in 1880. Three children were born to this marriage: Charles and Mary Ellen (Granville Horn) grew to adulthood, Lydia died in childhood.
In 1883, Christian married Esther E. Cline with whom 5 surviving sons were born: Jacob, Fred, Joseph, William and Russel. Three surviving daughters were: Rosa (Widner), Eva and Zoe. Earl and Bertha preceded their father in death.
