Phebe Clapp was born on March 22, 1825 in Genesee County, New York, most likely in Benington, Genesee County as that is where her parents were living in 1820 (per census). Phebe died on May 17, 1847 in Thetford Township, Genesee County, Michigan.

She was the daughter of Quartus Clapp (1790-1829) and Rhoda Winslow (1799-1871). Phebe had six full siblings:

Quartus Winslow (1816-1891), Elnora (1819-1870), Marietta (1820-1896), Rhoda (1824-1885), Julia Charlotte (1826-1853) and Fidelia (1828-1859).

Phebe also had four half-siblings from her mother's second marriage to Elias Randall in 1835: Olive (1836-1914), Helen M. (1837-1928), Elias P. (1839- ), and Francis R. (1841-1833)

Phebe's parents and her three oldest siblings were enumerated on the 1820 census for Benington, Genesee County, New York. I cannot find the Clapp family on the 1830 census. Her father Quartus had died in 1829 so her mother would have been head of household unless she moved back to live with her parents. Phebe's mother Rhoda remarried in 1835 to Elias Randall, most likely in New York but I cannot find the family on the 1840 census.

Some of Phebe's siblings moved to Michigan in the late 1830's or very early 1840's. Her brother Quartus married in Lapeer County, Michigan in November 1841 so Quartus must have come before some of their other siblings and their mother as all of Phebe's half siblings were born in New York during the years 1836 to 1841 (the last being born in September 1841). Given this, Phebe and her mother, step-father, half siblings and sisters Fidelia and Julia probably moved to Michigan with their mother and step-father in the early 1840's. Two of her sisters remained in New York - Elnora and Marietta; both Elnora and Marietta died in New York.. Fidelia married in November 1847 in Genesee County, but their sister Rhoda married in New York and was living there in 1855. However, by 1860 Rhoda and her husband had moved to Michigan and were living in Fremont in Tuscola County. Julia married in April 1844 in Thetford Township in Genesee County (Michigan).

Sadly, Phebe died young at age 22 years old on May 17, 1847 and was buried in Upton Cemetery. Her mother would later be buried next to her. From the book, "History of Genesee County, Michigan: With Illustrations and Biographical" on page 386, it indicates that Phebe was one of the earliest people to die in Thetford Township and to be buried in this cemetery. Upton Cemetery was established in 1839.

Phebe was my 4th great aunt; I am descended from her sister Julia
