Rev. Msgr. Clifford Bergin
The Rev. Msgr. Clifford Edward Bergin, who served as vice chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago and secretary to former Archbishops Albert Cardinal Meyer and John Cardinal Cody, died March 9 at the age of 80.
At the time of his death, Msgr. Bergin was suffering from bone cancer and residing at St. Benedict Home in Niles.
An Oak Park native, Msgr. Bergin was born May 26, 1927 and was baptized at Our Lady of the Angels Parish on the city's West Side. After attending Our Lady Help of Christians Elementary School, Msgr. Bergin graduated from Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary in June 1946, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake /Mundelein Seminary in May 1953. Msgr. Bergin had an excellent knowledge of foreign languages and could read and speak Italian as well as read French and Spanish.
Ordained a priest on May 1, 1953, Msgr. Bergin celebrated his first solemn Mass at Our Lady Help of Christians Church on May 3. On June 29 of that year, he was named assistant pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Chicago, where he served until July 1960.
Msgr. Bergin was then named master of ceremonies and secretary to former Cardinal Meyer. Between December 1963 and January 1968, Msgr. Bergin also served as vice chancellor of the Archdiocese, while simultaneously serving as secretary to former Cardinal Cody, Cardinal Meyer's successor, and as assistant pastor of Chicago's St. Aloysius Parish from 1966 to 1968.
Msgr. Bergin was then appointed assistant pastor of Oak Park's St. Edmund Parish, a position he held until May 1973. He then served two years as administrator of St. Priscilla Parish on the city's Northwest Side before serving as associate pastor of St. Gertrude Parish in Franklin Park and St. Henry Parish on Chicago's Northwest Side. Msgr. Bergin retired on August 1, 1995.
A sister, Patricia Kummerow, and several nieces and nephews survive Msgr. Bergin.
The Most Rev. Timothy Lyne, retired bishop of Chicago, celebrated the funeral Mass on March 13 in St. Martha Church, Morton Grove, with the Rev. John Enright, Msgr. Bergin's Mundelein seminary classmate, as the homilist. Interment was in All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.
