Rex was born July 18, 1920 in Moline, Illinois, grew up in Barstow, Illinois, graduating from grammar school first in his class of two. He attended high school in East Moline, Illinois, and, while working full time to support his family, graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force as a pilot cadet graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned to B 24 transition training in Montgomery Alabama, and thence to the 824th Squadron of the 484th Bomb Group being organized in Harvard Nebraska. The bomb group was assigned to the 15th Air Force in Italy. He and his crew flew missions over France, Germany, Austria, Romania, and Yugoslavia, including the Ploesti Oil Fields.

During his career he held positions with J. I. Case, John Deere, and HON INDUSTRIES. He retired in 1980 as President of Holga Metal Products, a Division of HON. After retiring he was involved in the remodeling of the old Firestone Tire Plant in South Gate, California.
Rex was active in mission work with the Lutheran Church. He served on the steering committee, organizing a mission church in Rock Island Illinois, and serving on mission church boards in Cedartown, Georgia, and Chester, Virginia.
In Retirement he has worked with other Rio Verde volunteers on Habitat for Humanity homes in Phoenix, Arizona.
He is survived by his sister Jeanette Carpentier of Rio Verde, Arizona, two sons, David Bennett and wife, Eileen, of Scottsdale, Arizona, and their children, Julie Walker and her children, Derrick and Baylee, and David Jason Bennett and his children, Chandler and Ashlyn, and Richard Bennett and wife, Gwen, of Phoenix, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Madelene, and by his second wife, Maureen, and his youngest sister, Marianne.
