Born in Ħaż-Żabbar, Malta, Dun Frans Buhagiar was ordained to the priesthood on August 1, 1943, and dedicated his whole life to the spiritual and social well-being of the parishioners of Żabbar.

Through his enthusiasm and collaboration with Parish Priest, Msgr. Giuseppe Zarb, the Żabbar Sanctuary was transformed into the artistic treasure it is today. Buhagiar was also involved in the organisation of festivities in connection with the crowning of Our Lady of Graces in 1951. He inspired and organized the commissioning of many words of arts such as the silver pedestal of the statue of Our Lady of Graces, the silver sanctuary lamp and several other artistic gems.

For many years Dun Frans served at the Archbishop's Curia and was also a teacher of Italian at the De La Salle College, Cottonera. Being the son of a Sicilian woman, he possessed an impeccable Italian accent.

Buhagiar published a historical booklet of the history of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces of Żabbar in Maltese, English and Italian. He passed away on June 28, 2001 aged 82.
