Funeral services for Erwin Steffen, 98, Cooperstown, were held April 15, at Saron Free Church, rural Cooperstown. Interment was in the Hannaford Cemetery. He died at his family farm April11, 1997.
Erwin was born January 27, 1899, in Clearfield Township, Griggs County, North Dakota, near Cooperstown, the son of William and Elizabeth (Danner) Steffen. He grew up and attended rural school near Cooperstown and attended North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo.
He married Ruth Mesner in 1924. She died July 12, 1930. He married Lillian Beattie June 16, 1935, in Cooperstown. The couple made their home southwest of Cooperstown where they farmed until 1961, when they retired. They continued to make their home on the family farm.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian, of Cooperstown; four daughters, Marjorie (William) Hazard of Cooperstown; Ruth Lende of Fortuna, CA; Kay (Charles) Johnson of San Jose, CA; Connie Schultz of Rockford, IL; 16 grandchildren' 22 great-grandchildren; one sister, Frieda Holland of Anacortes, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Roger; three brothers; and seven sisters.
