Manuel Silva Sr., 89, of Betony Road, Narragansett (Saunderstown),passed away Sunday, November 4, 2012 at home. He was the husband of Assunta (Celeberto) Silva. 


Born in Providence on September 29, 1923, a son of the late Joseph and Sarah (Bettencourt) Silva,


Manuel had been a resident of the South County area since 1964, coming from Providence.


During World War II, Mr. Silva served in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant in the 36th Texas Division, earning a Silver Star and a Purple Heart.


For many years, Manuel worked as a truck driver for McLean Trucking Co. and was a member of the Teamsters Local #251. He also was a member of the Fox Point Sports Club and an avid soccer player. 


Besides his wife, Mr. Silva is survived by his son, Manuel Silva Jr. of Charlestown; his daughter, Sarah J. Silva of Port Saint Lucie, Fla.; his sister, Angelina Silva of North Kingstown; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Joseph Silva and the brother of the late Joseph, John and Albert Silva and Mary Lopes. 


A graveside funeral service with full Military Honors will take place Friday, November 9 at 10 a.m. in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Route 2, Exeter. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Disabled Veterans of America, visit www.DAV.org. Arrangements were made by the Forbes Funeral Home of Wakefield.
