CHARLES GIBBS DEAD

An Exemplary Citizen, a Kind Father and a Good Friend Goes to His Reward

The solemn tones of the fire bells about 10 o'clock this morning was out of respect to the passing away of the oldest living member of Fair Play Fire Company No. 1--Mr. Charles Gibbs.

Up to three weeks ago this valued and worthy citizen, despite the fact that on July 4, last, he had rounded out the 74th year of a most useful and well-spent life, was still actively engaged in the transfer business with his nephew, Mr. John Gibbs.

At the age of fourteen years, when a mere stipling, the lad's father, Mr. Thomas Gibbs, who was the superintendent of the first cotton mill to locate here, died, leaving to the care of this son a family of several younger brothers and sisters, whom he looked after and reared with as much solicitude and patience as would befit the best of parents. At this tender age he also embarked in the transfer business and made a successful and continuous business up it up to a few years ago, when his declining years forced him to take up lighter duties.

His marriage to Ann Elizabeth Oehler was blessed with the coming of seven happy and bright daughters and one son, those surviving are:

Miss Estella, who is still at home.
Mrs. George J. Hummel, city,
Mrs. Burton Temple, Green Fork, Ind.
Mrs. S.W. Harshman, Indianapolis
Mr. Oliver Gibbs, Helena, Mont.

A brother, Mr. Wm. Gibbs, and several grandchildren, among them, Mrs. G.C. Shinn, Hagertown, Ind., survive.

"Uncle Charles," favorably and well known to young and old alike, was an exemplary citizen, stern for what was just and moral, yet quiet, kind and reserved in manner. A kind and indulgent father, a worthy friend, citizen and neighbor, he was held in high esteem.

The time of the funeral has not been decided, pending the arrival of the children, the burial, though, will be in Springdale cemetery.
