14 year old childFrances McLeod, 14-year-old victim of depression who died Friday at a St. Augustine hospital from the effects of self-inflicted gunshot wounds, was buried here Sunday afternoon at Oak Hill East Cemetery, through the kind offices of the American Legion.
Deeply grieved at the death of her father, Clavin C. McLeod, which occurred but a few weeks ago, and brooding over the family misfortunes, the young girl took her own life in a fit of despondency.
According to information collected by WPA workers, Frances was informed by her mother on Sunday morning, February 16, that there was no more food in the house. She stated that she would go to a neighbors for assistance, and picking up a shotgun that had been the property of her father, and a scrap of paper, she walked out.
The wounded girl was found some distance from the home, in a swamp that was knee-deep in water, with a hole torn in her stomach from a shotgun blast. Upon the paper had been scribbled a note, it is reported, which said, "Am going to hell; blame nobody but Frances." The note is in the possession of the sheriff of Flagler county.
Despite the serious nature of her wounds, the girl lived until the following Friday.
Calvin McLeod, the father, was a former service man and had of late supported the family from the proceeds of a pension, which was automatically stopped upon his sudden death. The family was left destitute. They resided seven miles from Bunnell, in a lonely section.
Surviving are the mother and three children, aged respectively, 12 and 9 years and seven months. (Palatka Daily News Obituary dtd Monday, 24 Feb 1936.)
