He may have died in Ontario county New York, I have yet to find him. He married Martha Stiles of Windsor Ct. They lived in Belchertown MA where he was constable for several years and otherwise factors as a man of prominence in Belchertown. After the war he apparently had debts he could not pay and he took part in Shay's rebellion, which shut down the courthouses in Northhampton and Springfield. After the rebellion was squelched and the courthouses re-opened some 20 acres of his land were seized and sold to pay off his debts. Evidently Father Forward of the Congregational Church did not think much of his participation in the rebellion and he never returned to church. Shortly afterwards the entire family moved west to Decatur NY (where they are mentioned building a Union Church), Honeoye NY (where Stiles and Elijah jr. are mentioned as fence viewers) and finally Ontario County NY. Given the extended families' departure for Kentucky in 1815, I suspect he died about then in Ontario County, NY. He married second a Miss Mary (Newton) Belknap with whom he had two children. James in 1779 and an unknown child.
