The son of Edward and Elizabeth K. Loos Hommel, he attended Columbia University, class of 1914, and Rochester School of Optometry. He joined his father in the Edward Hommel & Sons Optical House. He was one of the prime movers in the establishment of the Drama League of Syracuse and took part in amateur musical affairs. He was also a skilled pianist.

He enlisted in the Army in 1917 and was in the Signal Corps at Fort Wood. He also attended Officers' Training Camp at Camp Taylor and was honorable discharged in December 1918.
