Esquire of Elford, Clifton-Campville and Pipe, Staffordshire, Aldford, Etchells and Alderly, Chshire, Aston-sub-Edge and Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire. Son and heir of John Stanley and his frist wife, Cecily Ardene.

John married before 1470 to an unidentified wife. They had one son and three daughters: John, Anne, Margery and William Staunton and Elizabeth, wife of William Ferrers.

In 1475 he went to France in place of his father, a man at arms with six archers. In 1484 he was sued by his distant Arden cousins, Richard Wrottesley and Robert Leigh, for the manor of Aldford, Cheshire.

His daughter, Anne, would marry Sir Christopher Savage.
