PORTLAND - Chet J. Cardiff 90, died Sunday, October 24, at St. Vincent Hospital with family by his side. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., on Monday, November 1, at Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton. Chet was born November 28, 1919 in Tillamook, Ore. to Frank and Kathryn Cardiff. He grew up playing sports, working in the woods, and enjoying the beaches around Northwest Oregon. He served in World War II as a radio man aboard the carrier, USS Brennan. After his service, his pursuit of athletics led him to Albany College where he was a three sport athlete. Albany later became Lewis and Clark College; he earned his degree in Education. As an educator he worked 36 years in Oregon public schools, 33 of which he was a principal. He concluded his education career serving 15 years as an administrator for the Silverton School District. In 1963 an elementary school was named after him in Clatskanie, Oregon; "C J Cardiff School," which speaks to his commitment to students and education. Chet was a sports fan his entire life. He loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in athletics. He will be remembered for his kindness, support, and willingness to help those in need. He was married 61 years to Neva Sturm who preceded him in death 5 years ago. Survivors include his 5 children, Benny Cardiff, Denis Cardiff, Rene Cardiff, Nedra Esters, and Dean Cardiff; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.
