Daniel raised his family in the hub of the American textile industry, Lowell, Massachusetts, where he worked as an overseer at one of the many factories. After his wife died, Daniel arrived at San Francisco with his son aboard the SS Central America on 25 May 1852. At first, they took up mining on Red Mountain Bar near the Tuolumne River before arriving at Chinese Camp in 1853 where he was a shoemaker and shared in his son's businesses.

Upon making a journey to Stockton for supplies, he was drown in the raging waters of Six-Bit Gulch. He was only one of many who met the same fate at the crossing.
