There's a considerable amount of circumstantial evidence pointing to Eli having originally named "Zebal." He appears to be the Zebal Skinner listed in the family Bible of Richard & Rebecca (Rush) Skinner. As far as we can tell so far, he always went by Eli Skinner as an adult. Eli & Amelia (aka Emma, Emily) (Allen) Skinner were m. 2 Nov. 1837 by a JP in Perry Co., OH. Amelia ended up as "Meleca" on the marriage record.

Eli & Amelia owned and sold land near Gore, Hocking Co., OH before he d. in March of 1845. According to the 1921 bio. for their son Richard A. Skinner in Shumway's "History of Western Nebraska," Eli Skinner was a farmer in OH all of his life. The listing for the Eli Skinner family in the 1840 Saltlick Twp., Perry Co. census has him b. 1810-1820 and employed in mfg. Eli might've been working in the mill owned by his father Richard Skinner & step-mother Rachel (Skinner) Rush Skinner. An older woman listed as living with Eli & Amelia in that 1840 census may have been Eli's older unmarried sister Mary Skinner, possibly helping to care for the young children. His father Richard Skinner was nearby on this same 1840 Perry Co., OH census and listed as employed in mfg. Listed next to the Eli Skinner family on this 1840 census was Eli's brother Ephraim Skinner, who had m. Tersia Spurgeon in Perry Co., OH.

Evidence for Eli Skinner having been Zebal Skinner is also found in the records and remembrances of his niece Sarah Elizabeth (Jennings) Dean, who d. 10 April. 1936. She mistook Eli for his older brother Isaiah Skinner b. 1805 in her remembrances when she recalled a m. to Emma Allen. The recorded information about this remembrance was according to Charlou Dolan of Salt Lake City, longtime Skinner researcher associated with the Skinner Kinsmen website, who also found in her research that Isaiah appeared to have been a life-long bachelor. Charlou is a descendant of Eli's older sister Margaret (Skinner) Jennings. Zebal was the only son in that family who fit what we know about Eli Skinner. Eli Skinner also might've been related somehow to Amelia's second husband Reuben Spurgeon, who chose to raise the four Skinner children with his own after he m. Amelia in 1849 Hocking Co., OH. It's possible that his sister Tersia Spurgeon having married Eli's brother Ephraim Skinner was enough of a relationship for Reuben Spurgeon to choose to raise the Skinner children with his own.

The photo on this memorial is of Amelia with Millie (Spurgeon) Leaman, a dau. from her second marriage. It isn't known where or how Eli Skinner died. That he died in March of 1845 was passed down in the family of Eli's youngest son Eli Morris Skinner, according to the late Mary Moore of WY. It was remembered that Eli died three months before his son Eli Morris Skinner was born in June of 1845. Mary kept a record most of her life of what she could learn about the family history from the older members of Eli Morris Skinner branch.
