The 1862 date-of-birth shown on her headstone seems to be incorrect. It is inconsistent with every census report, her Death Certificate and the age difference between her and her husband, Patrick.

Mary was the daughter of John Kane and Mary (Clarke) Kane. She immigrated to the U.S. in 1887, according to her son. She also had a brother by the name of Jack Kane. Her parents remained in Ireland.

Mary met Patrick Egan and they were married at the St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church in New York City on October 27, 1889 and one child was born to these parents, Peter Joseph Egan, on March 3, 1891.

About 1904 Mary and her son Peter traveled by train across the country from New York City to Los Angeles to join her husband who had gone ahead to find work. Eventually, they made their home in the Hyde Park Region of the city.

As was customary in those times, Mary took care of the family and the household. On their large Hyde Park lot, she and Patrick had a California bungalow behind the main house that they rented for additional income. Mary was 76 years old when she passed.
