He and Catherine were parents of: John Boyd Cartmill 1824-1895; Amanda M.1828-1846; James Perry Cartmill 1828-1923; Elizabeth Ann 1832 - unk; Robert B., 1836-1923, and William Thomas Cartmill 1838-1920.
His father participated to a great extent in the Revolutionary War and in the Militia. He was also Sheriff of Botetourt County, VA.
