MRS. JAMES HUME PASSES TO REWARD
Another Pioneer of This Vicinity Dies Sunday, March 24, 1912
HAS RESIDED HERE SINCE 1850
Husband Passed Away Only A Few Months Ago- Funeral Wednesday –Burial at Moundville
Mrs. James Hume passed quietly to her reward Sunday afternoon, March 24, 1912, at 5:30 p.m., after an illness extending over a year. Her death took place at the family home, 616 DeWitt Street, and she was surrounded by the members of the family. Although Mrs. Hume had been in feeble health for many months she was able to be about until Sunday, March 10, when she slipped and fell on a hardwood floor at her home and dislocated her hip. Her condition was known to be serious from the time of the accident, as her advanced age and weakened condition because of illness, gave little hope for her recovery. Mrs. Hume was a woman possessed of an exceptionally beautiful character and disposition-always neighborly, friendly and cheerful. She was an earnest Christian woman and a devoted member of the First Presbyterian congregation of this city. Mrs. Hume's maiden name was Jane Leggitt. She was a native of Hamilton Scotland. Born June 11, 1831, she came to America at the age of 19, and was united in Marriage in 1850 to James Hume. They were among the first residents of Fort Winnebago and for many years occupied the Prentice Farm at the old Fort. Mr. and Mrs. Hume pursued farm life until twenty years ago when they retired and for a number of years lived in the town of Ft. Winnebago. Fourteen years ago last September they moved to Portage, where Mr. Hume died December 22, 1911, after a short illness of pneumonia. Since the death of her husband, Mrs. Hume has gradually declined in health, and she has been tenderly cared for by her granddaughter, Miss May Hume, whose every desire was to comfort her widowed grandmother in her declining days. Seven children survive Mrs. Hume; they are Mrs. James Smith, James L. and Matthew Hume of Endeavor; William A. Hume, Neenah; John Hume. Mrs. George Bain, Ft. Winnebago; and Walker Hume, Portage. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock from the home, 616 DeWitt Street. Rev. Cleland and Rev. E. Trimm will officiate. The remains were taken to Moundville and will be interred in Moundville Cemetery.
