Robert was the first of six children of William and Annie (Merritt) Taylor. Tragically, he died in April 1892, when he was only seven years old, from injuries received when he was struck by a vehicle owned by the Philadelphia Traction Company. At the time of his death, Robert had one sibling; a two year old sister, Bessie Viola.

"TAYLOR - On the 12th inst., Robert Merritt, son of William H. and Annie Taylor, aged 7 years.
The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, on Friday afternoon, at 1 o'clock, from the residence of his parents, 1945 Alder street."
