Eugene Myers, 78, Dies in Oceana
Won Success in Farming Though Blind All His Life

New Era, March 21 - Eugene Myers, 78 years old, widely known as a successful Oceana county farmer despite the fact that he had been blind since birth, died last night at the home of his niece, Mrs. Milo Sweet in Grant township, after suffering a heart attack Tuesday.

Born Sept. 25, 1857 in Easton, Ionia county, Mr. Myers' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Myers, came by way of a boat from Grand Haven to Whiskey Creek and settled in a log house in Claybanks in 1861. He helped build and attended the Cranston school and on the death of his father in 1897 assumed the management of a 200-acre farm, which he sold in 1910, when he went to live with a sister, Mrs. Jeannette Dewey at New Era. After Mrs. Myers' death in 1928 he made his home with his niece.

The Sylvan Grange presented Mr. Myers a gold sheath at the end of 50 years membership.

Surviving are his niece, a sister, Mrs. Josephine Farrah of Albuquerque, NM, and a nephew, Edward Myers of Shelby. Funeral services will be held from the Cranston Methodist church at 2 pm Monday, with the Rev. W.E. Beckett, pastor of the Shelby Methodist church in charge. Burial will be in Cranston, west of here.
